How to: Update the Firmware of you phone

| Thursday, November 4, 2010
The most anticipated firmware update in Nokia history is due to arrive in the next few days. Firmware Version 2.0 brings not only kinetic scrolling but also more allocated storage and more widgets. In general, a Firmware update brings improvements, bug fixes and new features. However, some users aren’t aware of how to update the Nokia N97 or any other S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 or 5th Edition device. In this article I’ll show the two basic ways to update the firmware. The process is pretty simple. Either you can do it straight from your phone or using your PC.

Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA):
Firmware over-the-air is maybe the easiest way to get the latest firmware onto your Nokia device. The advantage of this method is that it doesn’t require a desktop computer at all. In order to check for a new firmware update enter *#0000# on on the homescreen. Thereafter, click ‘options’ and choose ‘check for updates’. If a new update is available you can download and install it easily directly from this application. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.  The following video shows you the whole step-by-step procedure:

The second way to get the latest Firmware onto your N97 or any other S60 device is the Nokia Software Updater. After downloading, installing and running the Nokia Software Updater on your PC (which you can download here), you need to connect your mobile phone with your computer. To do this you will need to use either the mini or microUSB cable, whichever is relevant for your device, and choose the PC Suite connectivity option when prompted. Then just follow the on-screen instructions and wait until everything is done.
Things to bear in mind:
Before the update can commence you need to make sure that your phone is fully charged. More over, make a backup of all your data and settings. If you have a Nokia N97, E75 ,5800XM or any other phone that features User Data Preservation (UDP), you don’t have to make a backup as all the data and settings will be preserved. If you are unsure whether your device has this feature we urge you to consult your Nokia user guide or make a backup to be certain.
